Health and safety should be top of the agenda for all business owners. They have the legal responsibility to put practices and procedures in place that will identify potential hazards and minimise risks.

However, it is not just the employer who has health and safety responsibilities. Everyone in the workplace has a duty to act in a way that reduces risks and that does not put other people in danger. This applies to temporary and part-time staff as well.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, all employees have a legal duty to protect their own health and safety, but they also have a duty to safeguard anyone who could be affected by their actions at work. It is their responsibility to cooperate with all health and safety initiatives.

Poor posture at work can cause a whole host of muscular-skeletal issues. Holding the body in one position for a prolonged period of time can put a strain on joints and muscles. This will eventually lead to inflammation and pain. Also, doing the same task over and over again can cause problems. It could be using a mouse and keyboard, or it could be working on an assembly line. This can lead to repetitive strain injuries.

Workers can help themselves in these situations. They can make sure that they are sitting correctly in their seat and making the necessary adjustments of the height, lumbar support and arm rests. They can also take a short break every now and then to stretch.

Top mechanical health and safety tips

Some workplaces have specialist machinery and equipment installed, and this can present a unique health and safety challenge. For example, if you have a Vacuum Conveyor installed, it is the employer’s duty to make sure that it is installed in the right way and is the correct equipment for the job.
